Like a great poet named Jay-Z once said, “We don’t believe you, you need more people!” Yes, I’m talking to you NASA! A blog post from NASA has people all over the internet in a frenzy regarding the “change” of their zodiac sign due to the discovery of a 13th constellation named Ophiuchus. I’m here to put this screaming baby to bed.
First off, this is an OLD news story that surfaced a few years ago and found some new legs. If you read the post by NASA, they start by saying “First Things First: Astrology is not Astronomy!” And they are absolutely right. Astrology is the study of planets in the universe and how it affects us peeps living on earth. Astronomers are scientists that study outer space. So WHY is the writer (who wrote this anyway?) taking it amongst him/herself to “change” the zodiac signs and how they are used in astrology? Stay in your lane, son!
Now don’t get me wrong, I have a great deal of respect for astronomers and I’m extremely fascinated by everything that happens in the Universe. In fact, I recently made a fun visit to the Adler planetarium in Chicago.
I totally respect science but I also believe that some things in this world simply cannot be explained. I believe in miracles, and angels, and “as above, so below.” If we’re apart of the universe, how could we NOT be affected by it? I mean…the average woman’s menstrual cycle is 28 days, almost exactly the same amount of time it takes the moon to orbit earth. The zodiac sign Cancer is ruled by the moon and is connected to the mother in an astrological chart. I can go on and on explaining what seems to be inexplicable.
We all have our own belief systems and I definitely am not trying to change yours. BUT since I am Astrofashionista and astrology is my second language, I have to take a stance on this 13th zodiac hoopla. And my stance is BYE FELICIA to NASA.
Without getting too technical, here’s a simple explanation as to why your zodiac sign has not changed…Western astrology (which most of you are probably somewhat familiar with), is tied to the Tropical Zodiac which is based on the four seasons – Aries signals the beginning of spring, Cancer, summer, Libra fall and Capricorn, winter. So while I and other western astrologers know know the universe is constantly changing and expanding, we use Ptolemy’s (remember that guy from history class?) tropical system based on Earth’s seasons and the annual path of the sun, not the actual fixed stars (constellations) in the sky. Vedic astrologers (popular in the east) use sidereal astrology, which is tied to the actual positions of the constellations in the sky. Ophiuchus could possibly affect this system. But from some of my research, they’re not buying it either. There are 88 official constellations in the sky and Ophiuchus, you’re not that special boo!
I’ve dabbled in Vedic astrology and plan to incorporate it in my astrology practice in the years to come but I want to let it be known that as of today I will continue to write horoscopes for the 12 signs as we know them. No Ophiuchus allowed. I’ve studied hundreds of natal charts over the years and I have never met a person whose western chart does not give me a glimpse into their personality.
So there you have it folks, you can stop panicking. If you’re an Aries, you’re still selfish, Taurus, still materialistic, Leo, still self-centered, Scorpio, still crazy. JUST KIDDING! Really, I’m just kidding!
